It covers 70 km2 of the western North Cascade Mountains of Washington. The western end of the area lies on the Sauk River opposite the town of Darrington. T An in-depth study of a m interval within the Lost Burro Formation, exposed in Death Valley National Park, California, was undertaken in order to ascertain whether or not the banding within the unit represents systematic changes in the depositional environments.

In the course of this study, 57 thin sections were made and examined, resulting in the identification of six Standard Microfacies. The Strathcona Mine is located at the east end of the sulphide-rich contact area of the North Range in a zone of thickened sublayer, the Strathcona Embayment (Coats and Snajdr, ).
